A Letter from the President

Welcome to the Brazos Valley Jazz Society!

The world of jazz music has never been more exciting, with new innovative artists, the classic jazz masters, and the increasing influence of fusion and world music. The BVJS aspires to further the availability of all these jazz styles to audiences in our community.

A jazz composition goes hand in hand with its improvised performance. As a popular - and continuously evolving- art form, jazz is contemporary communication, personal expression, and movement. Louis Armstrong said “You play your horn just like you sing a song or a hymn. If it’s in your heart, you express yourself to the tune.” Duke Ellington said that he would never hire a musician who couldn’t dance, because he wanted players who understood rhythm and could “make a phrase dance”.

We invite you to enjoy and expand your musical horizons with us as we advance the performance, education, and awareness of jazz in the Brazos Valley.

-Peter Lieuwen

“The music. The music. Music is a moment. But life’s a long time. In that moment, when it’s good, when you really swinging-then you joined to everything, to everybody, to skies and stars and every living thing.”

- James Baldwin
